Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA's Backyard

"Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA's Backyard." LiveScience.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2013.

In the article “Dinosaur Footprints Lifted From NASA’s Backyard” we learn that a chunk of stone bearing dinosaur footprints has been carefully lifted from the grounds of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight in Maryland. The tracks are thought to have been left there more than 100 million years ago and were discovered this past August by paleontologist Ray Stanford. It appears to be the footprint of a nodosaur, a tanklike dinosaur studded with bony protuberances that roamed during the Cretaceous Period which is from 145 million years ago to 65 million years ago.

This article is very significant to the discovery of fossils. This event of finding this footprint shows that scientists are continuing to make discoveries of organisms that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. And it makes you think that there could still be organisms out there that scientists have discovered fossils from.
Although the article was written well, there are some things the author could have done to make it better. First, he could have added a picture of what we think the dinosaur appears to look like, because I think that would have been very interesting based on the description of it.  Also, he could have added how often scientists are finding footprints of these dinosaurs, and how these footprints are preserved over the millions of years.

  1. I read my classmate, Ralph’s review on the article, “Dinosaur Footprints Lifted in NASA’s backyard.” Ralph did a great job telling us what the article was about, he told us about the dinosaur footprints that were lifted up in Maryland. Ralph also did a great job describing the nodosaur to us and telling us how tan it was. Ralph also did a great job giving his own opinion to the article and telling us what he thought the author could have done better. Two things Ralph could have improved on were his explanation of the article was a little vague and short and giving quotes or examples from the article. One thing I learned was how these dinosaur prints were from over 65 million years ago, this really shocked me. Overall, Ralph did a great job reviewing this article.

  2. I read my fellow classmate, Ralph’s review on the article, “Dinosaur Footprints Lifted in NASA’s backyard.” I found his review to be really interesting and well written. One thing I like about his review was that he included key information such as, how old the dinosaur footprint could be and what type of dinosaur made the footprint. Also, I like how Ralph described the dinosaur and told us about when the time period was that it lived in on earth. In addition, Ralph brought up a really interesting fact, that there is a possibility that there could still be some organisms out there that scientist still has not found fossils of yet.
Even though Ralph wrote a nice review there is a couple of detail he could improve on. I did not like his summary of the article and found it be a little boring and short. Also, he could have integrated a couple of quotes into the review making it more interesting to read.
From the review I learned about the nodosaur dinosaur. I had never heard about this species of dinosaurs. Overall Ralph wrote a good review.

  3. I read my fellow classmate, Ralph, review on the article, "Dinosaur Footprints Lifted in NASA's Backyard. I found Ralph's review to be very good and interesting. First off, I really liked the way Ralph put his own voice into the article. For example, he did a good job of adding his own opinion on multiple topics. Second, Ralph did a great job defining confusing vocabulary and terms. For example, Ralph said a nodosaur is a tank-like dinosaur and said that the Cretaceous period was from 145 to 65 million years ago. Lastly, ralph did a fantastic job of critiquing the article. For instance, Ralph suggested that the article add a picture and include how often discoveries like this are made.
Although Ralph's review was great, he could do a few things to make his review better next time. First off, Ralph should have added more detail and statistics. I realize that this is a new discovery and there is most likely little statistics, but it would have been good if Ralph included some detail, such as the size of the nodosaur. Finally, Ralph could have added a quote or the scientists perspective on what this discovery means.
One thing I found really interesting to learn about was the nodosaur. Furthermore, I find it fascinating that with all the technology in the world, scientists are still making new discoveries all of the time.

  4. My fellow classmate Ralph wrote a great review on the article “Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA’s Backyard.” Ralph did a great job giving us the information that was essential for us to know about the article. He made the information simple and understandable. Ralph makes the whole review very nicely; it is easy to read, this also allows for the reader to understand everything in greater detail. I also liked how Ralph gave his honest opinion on what he thought about the article. Two things I thought Ralph could have done to improve the review were possibly including a little bit more information in his summary. I also think Ralph could have told us why he decided to chose this article. The one thing I really found interesting was the fact that we can find remains of some dinosaurs that lived over 100 million years ago. All and all Ralph did a really great job on his review.

  5. I read my classmates Ralph's review on this article, "Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA's Backyard." Ralph did a great job writing this article because he made the information easy to read. He also organized his ideas nicely and and summarized the article in only a few sentences. He also showed information on how this event is significant to later science discoveries. Two things that I think Ralph could have improved on were that he could have added a quote from the article or he could have lengthened it more. One thing that I found that was interesting was that scientists are still finding things from 100 million years ago. Overall Ralph did a good job on summarizing his article.

  6. My classmate Wreck-It-Ralph reviewed the article, "Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA's Backyard." One thing that Ralph did great, was his description of the article. It was short, sweet and to the point, which definitely held my interest. Another thing that Ralph did well was his article choice. This article definitely seems like an interesting topic. Finally, Ralph did a nice job voicing his opinion. I agree, I think that it would have been nice to see a picture of what this dinosaur may have looked like. Some things that Ralph could work on for next time include expanding on the ideas of how it relates to the world. His second paragraph was a little short, it just needed a little bit more beef to it. Lastly, Ralph could work on his overall length of his review. I thought it was a little short, but it certainly held my interest and it overall got the job done. One fact that really surprised me was that this fossil was found on the NASA space grounds. Overall, Wreck-It-Ralph did an excellent job and I look forward to reading more of his reviews in the future.

  7. I read Ralph’s summary about the dinosaur footprints found by NASA. I really liked how Ralph gave the specifics about the findings. Instead of telling us they were dinosaur footprints he told us that it was a nodosaur, and tells us it is “tanklike”. Another thing done well is the ability to actually criticize the author very well. He tells us he should have been more visual with pictures or telling us more about the preservation process. The last thing that was done well was that Ralph makes a good connection with this new discovery and how this impacts our world. This brings the possibility of finding new organisms through fossils that have yet to be discovery.
I think that some things could have been done better. For example there could have been more detail in telling us more about the finding. The audience wants to know more about where the fossil was found or maybe even how big the footprint. Another thing that could improve the summary is making a more thorough connection to how this affects the world today. It is true that more connections to dinosaurs more discoveries but how will this improve science. Why is it that this nodosaur of the other nodosaurs that have been found effect the world?
Honestly I think that this summary was one of the more interesting ones because although it was short I have actually learned more than others that were longer. This was because Ralph took the most key points and successfully put them into his summary for the audience to read. There were not excessive facts or over analyzing of the information. There was just enough to keep the reader engaged and not bored.

  8. My classmate, Ralph, made an interesting review of the article “Dinosaur Footprints Lifted From NASA’s Backyard”. I thought that his description of the type of dinosaur that the footprint was from was very clear and informative. He also did a good job of analyzing the article, and making some very interesting conclusions in his second paragraph. A third thing that I thought he did really well was making very accurate suggestions that would have made the article even better, and I agreed with all of the suggestions that he made.
Although Ralph’s review was very good overall, there were a couple of things I would have done differently. I thought that Ralph could have gone into more detail about what other dinosaurs might have lived during the Cretaceous Period, and what the world was like then. I also thought that Ralph could have could have given a little more information about the discovery of the footprint, and how scientists know that it is from a nodosaur.
There were a couple of things that surprised me when I read the review of this article by Ralph and the article itself. One of these things was that I was unaware that scientists were still discovering more about dinosaurs, and that they were still discovering fossils and footprints in places as populated as the United States.
