Hank Thomas
http://www.livescience.com/29259-nasa-rover-explores-greenland.html
I read the article "To explore Greenland" by Douglas Main.  The article was about how NASA has decided to branch out their research into exploring our earth's mysteries as well as outer space.  They are starting this new project with a new solar powered rover that will be studying Greenland's ice sheets  from May 3rd to June 8th.  The rover will study how the ice formed and from that discover why they have been melting.  With this info they may be able to stop ice from melting all around the globe.  In order to gain this information the rover will send radio wave pulses into the ice to inform the researchers about the ice's characteristics and from there they can continue to find new things about the ice.
Right now learning about the ice is a key thing for humanity's duty with nature.  Global warming gets worse each day and the pollution levels rise.  Forests and glaciers get smaller each day as well.  This rover will be a huge step to save these beautiful landscapes.
I thought the author did a great job getting the information on the rover across.  It was well informed with a lot of detail.  I would have wanted to know more about what they were going to apply this new information on, but overall he did a great job.

  1. I read Hank’s review on the article “To explore Greenland”. It is a very interesting article and Hank did well on reviewing it. First, he introduced the purpose of putting the rover on Greenland and what observations scientist can get from it. I think it’s very important to know the purpose of it, like all the other experiment, because that make the data focus on a specific area of study. According to the review, the rover “will study how the ice formed and from that discover why they have been melting”. This leads to the next thing that is well presented: the benefit of the exploration. Hank did a great job on presenting how this topic related to the readers and why readers should care about it. I’m very interested in what new things are going to be found on Greenland to help us solving the problem of global warming. He also wrote a very good ending paragraph which shows his interest in the topic.
Although Hank did a very good job, few more things could be added. First, he could put some quotes from the article to make it more professional. He can also have more detailed information about GROVER, like it’s a “solar-powered and semi-autonomous” rover, and it “was developed from 2010-2011 by teams of students in summer engineering boot camps at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland”. These facts can enrich the review and make it more interesting.
I think it’s a very review and I was a little surprised that “NASA’s newest rover won't be exploring another planet, but will take a look at part of our own”. I’m look forward to the data that GROVER may bring us about the ice in the future.

  2. I read Hank Thomas’ review on the article, “To Explore Greenland” which was about NASA’s plan to research many of Earth’s mysteries that can greatly affect life, including troubles with global warming. Hank did a great job on his review on this article by making it very interesting. First, he wrote a summary of NASA’s new plan to start the research with Greenland’s ice sheets, making his summary short and to the point without any other words to drag the readers attention to a new topic. For example, even though this topic is new to the world, he gave a brief summary of the plan for the future, but mainly talked about what has already been accomplished. Secondly, I liked how he gave an honest opinion about the research, saying that he would like to learn more information because this will affect and impact us later on. Lastly, though his reasoning for how this could affect humanity was short, he gave all the information that was needed for the reader to gain a full understanding. Hank added in more information that he inferred from his own research on this article that shows he understands it and read in between the lines. Although his review was great, there were a few things he could’ve improved on to make it even better for next time. First, being adding more information into his summary and reasoning to why this will affect humanity. Though this project NASA has created is new and information isn’t well known because of this, additional research could’ve been used to build a more detailed work. Lastly, because this project is only a few days old, this article might not have been the best to choose. Even though the topic is intriguing, having an article with a great deal of information is helpful when writing up a review. Overall, I was very impressed by the information told from this actual article because NASA usually deals with explorations of space, not so much Earth.

  3. I read Hank’s article summary on “To explore Greenland”. One thing I liked about the review was how Hank introduced us to the topic. He first said that NASA is responsible for what will be talked about and that NASA is not only involved in space related science. He then goes to tell us about how they are going to pursue certain studies in Greenland. Another thing that is done well is that Hank is very clear. He does not use any terms the reader does not know without explaining them. It was very understandable which made it interesting. The last thing that was done well was connecting this experimenting to the actual importance and effect it has on the world. Hank says that if enough information is gathered we can figure out how the ice is melting and figure out a way to save our planet undergoing global warming.
Although summary was fairly good, there could have been some edits to make it better. First off Hank could have wrote more in the analysis. I understood what he was saying and it made sense but further explanation was needed to complete his idea. Another thing that could have been done better was the critique. I wasn’t exactly sure of what the author did that was good or bad.
Overall I think this article was really interesting. I am happy and excited that this research will occur and it’s good to know that humans are doing there best to solve the world problems. I thought it was interesting how we will send rovers not into space, but to Greenland in order to study the ice there, and why and how it is melting.

  4. I read Hank Thomas's review on the article "To Explore Greenland." Hank did many things well in this review. First off, hank did a good job of stating the importance of finding how the ice is melting. For example, Hank stated that glaciers around the world are melting and this would be a great discovery. Second, Hank gave a good, honest review of the article. Hank honestly said that he would like to know more about what NASA plans to do with this information. Lastly, Hank did a great job of his description of the article was good. Hank gave good detail in his description about how the rover will collect the data using radio waves.
Although Hank's review on "To Explore Greenland" was good, there are a few things he could do better for next time. Hank provided good detail on how the rover will make the discovery, but he failed to provide an specific detail or statistics about the rover or ice on Greenland. Second, Hank could have added a quote to his review so the reader could get a feel for how the article was written. Moreover, Hank could have included the scientist opinion on sending the rover.
Overall, I thought Hank did a great job with his review. I was surprised to see that NASA is exploring the Earth because i also thought that they exclusively explored space. I hope the rover finds something useful because the melting ice and glaciers can be catastrophic.
