Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet

In the article Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet by Tariq Malik, the article describes the impact of the recent solar flare and how it effected humanity. The article explained that at around 3:16 a.m., radio connection was lost in many places of the world and was registered as a 6.5 sun storm. The article then went into detail on how an even greater storm might affect earth and how we can stay prepared. The number of the storms are ramping up and this is what studies have found, "Increased numbers of flares are quite common at the moment, since the sun's normal 11-year cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in late 2013." We will never know when a storm may occur however, we will always be ready.

This article is significant to our everyday lives

because we will not know when the next solar storm may be. We

must stay prepared and stay out of harms way for solar storms

could be deadly. This incident could happen any day to anyone

and it is very serious.

There are very few critiques I have on this article.

The one area where the author could have changed is how we as

citizens can be prepared and alert. I wish that he gave us a few

sentences that we could use to help us in this situation. Other

than that, the article was interesting, educating, and important.

  1. I read the review of article “Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet” by Jack McCann. It is a short review, while containing very detailed facts. First of all, Jack chose a very significant quote that explains the reason behind this biggest solar flare. It also talks about how it may affect the future. Jack also mentioned how important this topic is by repeating the fact that we don’t fully understand the flare activity cycle yet. Before we discover the mystery behind it, preparation is the most important thing to us now. So Jack’s critique of more sentences on how to be prepared and alert was very true. If the suggestion was integrated in the article, it will call more attention around the world.

Although it’s a well-written review, few suggestions can be added to make it even better. First, instead of saying “The article then went into detail on how an even greater storm might affect earth”, Jack could tell the readers directly what those details are and “how” an even greater storm might affect earth. Second, Jack can add more information background or research on the topic. Words like solar flare and specific measurements like “6.5 sun storm”, readers may know little about it. Giving simple definitions will help a lot on reader’s better understanding of the review.

After all, it is a very interesting topic that Jack chose. It shows the sun is not only giving the earth energy and its revolution, it can also release things that may harm it in someway, before it becomes a red giant.

  2. My classmate Jack wrote an intriguing review on the article “Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet.” Jack did a solid job with this review and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a couple of thing sin particular I liked, first off I like how he connected the article to us today. I also enjoyed how Jack critiqued the actual article. The final thing I really enjoyed about the review was how you could tell in the review that Jack had a passion for this topic, and it showed in the review. Even though the review was good, there were some things that Jack could have improved on. First off I thought he could have included more detail in his summary, as I did not think there was enough. I also believed that Jack could have included more quotes as he only had one in his review. One thing that I took away from this review was how dangerous these solar storms can happen, and how there is not much we can do about it. All and all Jack did a good job, and I enjoyed reading his review.

  3. I read my classmate jack McCann’s review on the article “Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet.” Jack wrote a nice review that I found interesting and enjoyable. He did a good job at recalling the events that took place during the solar flare, such as the time the storm hit earth, 3:16 AM. Also I found it fascinating how he relates the review back to our everyday lives. In addition jack critiqued the actual article and pointed out key details that needed to be changed.
Although Jack’s review was good he could make a few improvement on it. Jack at the beginning of the review didn’t really explain what a solar flare was and I had to look up what one was. I found his review to be a little short and with not much detail in it. If jack used more quotes from the article there would have been more details.
One thing I learned from this article was that solar flares are dangerous and we should always be prepared for one.

  4. My classmate Jack's report on "Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet." was very interesting and brought out the most interesting and intriguing facts of the article. I enjoyed Jack's opinion integrated within the facts of the article as well. One thing I really liked about Jack's review is how he connected his article to us. He made the point that if this ever happens again it could be very serious, and it could happen at any time. Although Jack made a great summary he has room for improvement. His summary was a little short and could use a few more details about the article. Also there were some vocabulary words in his summary that he never explained leaving the reader to have to look it up for themselves. But overall Jack wrote a great report. I learned just how dangerous the sun can be and how this may affect us in the future.

  5. I read Jack McCann’s article, “Sun unleashes biggest solar flare of the year yet.” This article was about how the number of sun storms is increasing and this is a possible danger to out society. The first thing that was done well in the summary was that he included numbers for his facts giving a reader a clearer idea of the text. For example he said there was a 6.5 storm. Another thing that was done well was an included quote. Given a quote we are always given a sense of how the writing of the actual article was like. The last thing that was done well was the critique. Although the article was very good Jack still found a flaw that he was able to point out.
Even though Jack’s review was good it could have still been better. First of all the summary was very unclear in some parts. For example he tells us that there was a recent sun flare or sun storm. How is the reader suppose to know what a sun storm is? Without knowing this it is more difficult to understand the whole article as a whole. The second thing that could have been done better was the length and clarity. Throughout the whole article I was not really sure of things and what was going on. More explanation is needed.
I found it interesting how dangerous the sun can be, since I did not know about this. I was never aware of a sun storm but now know of them and their danger. However, it would be nice to learn more about them and what they actually are or do.

My peer Jack chose a very interesting article about how there are increasing numbers of solar flares. How these solar flares could potentially be dangerous. I like how this article applies to what we are learning in our core earth science class. I also liked how Jack made this article sound very pressing, important, and most of all urgent.
I feel Jack could have been more specific about what his article was about. He could have added more information. I also feel like he didn’t put in his review enough opinion. I wish I had heard more about what he believes.
Before reading this article I did not know about how dangerous and unpredictable the sun’s flares are.

  7. I read Jack McCann’s review on the article, “Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet” which talks about the recent increase in solar flare ups on the Sun. We have recently finished discussing different topics and aspects of the solar system so rediscovering this field of information was easy to do. Jack provided very detailed information about the exact time this event occurred and how this can affect humanity as early as this year. I enjoyed how he brought forth a problem that most people would be fascinated to hear about because it can affect them directly. Making certain topics fun to learn and hear about is hard, but I think Jack did a great job with explaining his article using an opinion most young adults would agree with. Lastly, I liked how Jack criticized this article because he showed how he actually cared about this problem. When most people choose articles, they can sometimes be unimportant or insignificant events that are most likely under the radar. I was able to tell that he is truly worried and cares about our planets safety. Two things I would recommend to improve upon his review would be to add more descriptive detail. Some information that would have been nice to add was scientifical facts about these solar flare ups. Even if the article you’re reviewing doesn’t state this, additional information and researching might be needed to reach requirements. Secondly, explaining what these solar flare ups could do to our Earth would have been great to add in the section on how this event can affect humanity. However, additional research may be needed to answer this as well. I found this article extremely interesting because I feel like everyone could relate to this matter directly. Overall, I think Jack did a great job reviewing this article.

  8. After reading my classmate, Jack McCann’s review on the article. “Sun Unleashes Biggest Solar Flare of the Year Yet,” I have come to learn more about the sun and how it can affect us. Three aspects that I thought were very well presented would be how Jack stressed the impact that the sun and its flare’s can have, Jack also did a good job adding original statements and quotes from the original article. Another thing Jack did well was connecting the topic of the article to today and make it easier for us to understand. Two things Jack could have done to improve this review would be to add a little bit more information and background for the reader to understand the topic more and Jack also could have toned down his own opinion and criticism in his review, sometimes this can sway the reader. One thing that I found especially interesting after reading this review was how very little we know about these sun flares and their actual impact, all we know is that we must protect ourselves from it.
